PRICE LAW — Life is not fair for everyone

Have you ever noticed that in a group, only a few people do most of the work?

This happens in schools, businesses, and even book sales.

A scientist named Derek Price discovered why. Derek Price was a British physicist and historian. He studied how work was distributed among people in a group.

He found a surprising pattern: only a small number of people create most of the results.

Two pie charts show uneven effort. Left: 90% red, 10% green (People). Right: 50% red, 50% green (Results). Text: Uneven Effort, Quantum Thinker.
Price Law - Uneven Effort

What Is Price’s Law?

Price’s law says that 50% of the work is done by the square root of the total workers.

Example: If 25 people are working, about 5 people (square root of 25) do half of the total work.

This pattern appears in many areas of life, including businesses and creative industries.

After one month, I noticed something strange. Only 4 people made more than half of the total sales. They were the top performers, almost like superheroes at work.

This follows Price’s law because 4 is close to the square root of 25.

Where Else Does Price’s Law Apply?

Famous authors follow this pattern too.

  • Stephen King has sold over 350 million books.

  • J.K. Rowling has sold over 400 million books.

Out of thousands of authors, only a few sell the most books.

What Does This Mean For You?

Not all work is equal.

A small group often makes the biggest impact.

If you want to succeed, ask yourself:

  • Are you creating real value?

  • Are you in the right place to succeed?

If the answer is no, it might be time for a change.

How to Apply This in Life

Do something you are good at.

Peter Drucker, a famous business expert, always said:

"Focus on your strengths to create value."

Example:

  • I create more value in my business than in a big company.

  • I write better blogs than social media posts.

The Key Takeaway

Life isn’t fair or even. A few people always create most of the results. Find a place where you can be one of those few people. When you do, success will follow!
