“Every perception is to some degree an act of creation, and every act of memory is to some degree an act of imagination.” - Gerald Edelman
On internet, I came to know about two words Perception and Perspective which generally used interchangeably but there is a slight difference in both of them:
PERSPECTIVE: the way/angle/side you look from. (Input)
PERCEPTION: your interpretation of people, situations, and the world. (Output)
These two thinking dimensions are so powerful that they can change your mindset, lifestyle, behaviour, and approach to anything when you use them effectively in daily life and there is third dimension commonly known as "BIAS".
Let see below image, Object can be considered as Truth - a physical dimension, but if you see from different angles, you can find out that observer from square side can see only square which is his perception that object is square while in actual it's not square.
Equation of 3D Thinking is Truth - Bias = Perception/Perspective (True).
In other words, 3D Truth is affected by 2D Bias to create multiple 2D perceptions as visualized below. Perspective is always single and at given point of angle while perceptions are many.
Perspective is the most important phenomenon to learn, understand and apply in order to become wise in the life. Everyone has Biases, like seeing life from one side and ignore another side. So, to reduce the bias, know more perceptions to improve your perspective knowledge.
Following are key maxims related to Perception:
Panoramic View or Birdseye View
“Looking at life from a different perspective makes you realize that it’s not the deer that is crossing the road, rather it’s the road that is crossing the forest.” - Muhammad Ali
“Once you see the world from a producer perspective, your perceptions sharpen like a fine-tuned radio frequency, from static to clear stereo sound. Suddenly, opportunities have clarity, ideas surface, and scams are exposed.” - M. J. Demarco
Confirmation Bias
“Perception is stronger than reality.” - Ivanka Trump
Availability Bias
“The nasty thing about the availability bias is that it insidiously distorts our view of the world by distorting our perception of past events and our environment.” - Leonard Mlodinow
Authority or Social Proof Influence
“We must not allow other people’s limited perceptions to define us.” - Virginia Satir
Listening and Viewing
“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” - Marcus Aurelius
Law of Gratitude
“It's failure that gives you the proper perspective on success.” - Ellen DeGeneres
Once you become expert in perspective and perceptions, no one can manipulate you but that takes time by reading, testing and experience.
