I often find that I forget about 95% of what I learn.
Despite my best efforts to read, journal, and absorb life’s wisdom, I continue to ignore the things that enhance my life.
It’s essential to periodically remind myself of what truly matters.
This could just be a quirk of my mind. Even though it may feel like we forget a lot, everything we read and practice does shape our lives.
Ralph Waldo Emerson captured this idea well with his observation:
“I have forgotten the books I have read, and so I have the dinners I have eaten, but they both helped to make me.”
The content we consume influences our thoughts, and the quality of our thoughts, in turn, affects our lives.
That’s why I safeguard what enters my mind as much as possible.
Avoid consuming trivial information like sensational news or mindless entertainment, and steer clear of toxic people.
Nurture your mind by reminding yourself of the things that improve your life.
14 Practices that remind myself
Here are 14 practices that help me become a better person:
Let Go of the Past
Today is a new day, and you’re a new person. Each day is a fresh start. Let go of yesterday’s actions and focus on having good intentions and making today exceptional.
Don’t Rush Things
Life is a journey; rushing through it means missing out on the present. Next time you hurry through your morning routine or work tasks, remember that life happens in the present moment. Ask yourself, “What’s the rush for?”
Shape Your Future
While living in the present is crucial, don’t neglect the future. Make conscious decisions to shape the life you want. Understand who you are and let your choices reflect that.
Appreciate Your Life
It’s easy to compare yourself to others and feel inadequate. Remember that your life is valuable just as it is. While improvement is always possible, recognize and appreciate what you already have.
Exercise Regularly
It’s tempting to skip workouts, but regular exercise is essential. Even a brisk 30-minute walk can make a difference. Skipping workouts can lead to discomfort and fatigue, so prioritize your health.
Read Enjoyable Books
Choose books that captivate you rather than those you feel obligated to read. If a book doesn’t engage you, set it aside and focus on ones that do.
Don’t Overload Your Day
It’s unrealistic to cram everything into a single day. Prioritize and spread out your activities throughout the week. Trying to do too much in one day can lead to unnecessary stress.
Keep a Journal
Writing in a journal enhances your thinking and helps you reflect on what matters. It’s a valuable tool for organizing your thoughts and understanding yourself better.
Understand Everyone Has Problems
When you expect something from others, remember they have their own challenges. Everyone faces difficulties, and acknowledging this can help you approach relationships with empathy.
Make Time for What Matters
We all have the same 24 hours each day. The key is to make time for what’s important to you, rather than waiting for more time to appear.
Lighten Up
Life can feel serious, especially when striving for improvement. Remember, everyone is just trying to navigate life’s challenges. Don’t be too hard on yourself—enjoy the process.
Maintain Momentum
Nothing stays perfect or stable without effort. Everything, from relationships to careers, requires ongoing work. If you don’t put in the effort, things will naturally decline.
Stand Up for Yourself
Don’t tolerate mistreatment. Be assertive, express your opinions, and take action when needed. Stand firm in your beliefs and actions.
Appreciate the Simple Things
It’s easy to get caught up in overthinking and stress. Decide to accept reality as it is and take time to appreciate the simple joys in life. Even amidst challenges, there are moments to cherish—just open your eyes to see them.
